HOPIQ SCORE

The Best American Belgian-Style Ales

34 beers from 28 breweries · Ranked by style authenticity — not marketing

These rankings are dynamic. As more people rate, match and like beers on hopIQ, community signals will increasingly shape the results alongside style authenticity and award recognition.

American craft Belgian brewing is what happens when Belgian tradition meets American craft freedom. Of the 34 American Belgian-style ales on this ranking, 7 are Belgian Tripel — the same sub-style-dominance as in Belgium itself — but the tail is unmistakably American: Fruited Belgian Tripel, Belgian Tripel with Hibiscus, Bourbon Barrel-Aged Tripel, and a Belgian Strong Golden aged in oak foeders. The Belgian tradition's complex yeast-driven ester profile provides the base; the American additions (fruit, barrel-aging, foeder time) push the beers into territory that Belgian breweries would generally treat as violations of the tradition and American breweries treat as extensions of it.

The hopIQ ranking captures 28 distinct breweries producing 34 beers — near-one-per-brewery diversity that reflects how broadly American craft has adopted Belgian references. Dedicated Belgian-focused breweries appear across the top group: Brewery Ommegang (Cooperstown NY, founded 1997 explicitly as a Belgian-style-focused brewery, now part of the Duvel-Moortgat family), Allagash Brewing (Portland ME, Belgian-tradition anchor of American craft since 1995), The Lost Abbey (San Marcos CA — a dedicated monastery-inspired Belgian program), Goose Island (Chicago — Matilda flagship), and Voodoo Brewing (Pennsylvania). This is one of the deepest craft-Belgian scenes anywhere in the world, and its stylistic freedoms have influenced Belgian brewers in return.

How this ranking works
The hopIQ Score weights style authenticity (80%), user engagement (10%), notability (10%), and award history. Active, in-production beers only — non-alcoholic excluded. No paid placement — order follows the data alone. Ranking spans 34 beers from 28 breweries.

It pours a luminous golden straw with a white, pillowy head and exceptional clarity. The aroma offers delicate floral notes, soft honeyed malt, and the characteristic spicy, fruity esters of authentic Belgian yeast. On the palate, it is refreshingly light-bodied yet rounded, balancing subtle biscuity sweetness with gentle herbal hop bitterness. The carbonation is lively and clean. The finish is dry, crisp, and elegantly short — an approachable yet nuanced blonde that honours its Continental roots while reflecting Chicago's adventurous brewing spirit.
