Devils Backbone Brewing Company was established in 2008 by Steve and Heidi Crandall in Roseland, Virginia, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Nelson County. The brewery was inspired by the couple's experience of craft beer at a German Weisse brewpub during an Alpine ski trip, which sparked a desire to bring European-style craft brewing to rural Virginia. Its Basecamp Brewpub near Roseland became the flagship location, and in 2012 a second production facility and taproom called The Outpost was opened near Lexington. In 2016, Devils Backbone was acquired by Anheuser-Busch InBev, significantly expanding its distribution reach while maintaining its Virginia identity.
