Shipyard started as a pub brewery: in 1992 Fred Forsley and master brewer Alan Pugsley poured their first Export Ale at Federal Jack's in Kennebunkport Harbor. Within two years demand outgrew the pub, so in 1994 the brewery opened in Portland, Maine, in the former Laughlin foundry on Casco Bay. Still family owned, it brews Export, Pumpkinhead (first brewed in 1996) and tries newer styles on a pilot system.
