Brother Thelonious

Tap to rate

Candied nuts and a sweet, luscious start open this rich, robust abbey ale, dark mahogany at 9.4% ABV and 27 IBU. Jazz legend Thelonious Monk inspired it, and North Coast brews it under license from the Monk Estate, with a portrait of him by California artist Eric Grbich on the label. From every bottle and keg, a donation goes to the education programs of the Monterey Jazz Festival. Gold at the 2015 European Beer Star.

◌ Aroma

Caramelized nuts and toffee dominate the nose, with supporting notes of dark dried fruit—raisin and prune—alongside subtle spice and warming alcohol that becomes apparent in the middle distance. Underneath runs a thread of bread crust and toasted grain, anchoring the sweeter aromatics. There is no aggressive hop presence; instead, a soft, elegant complexity unfolds with aeration.

◐ Taste

The palate opens rich and luscious, with immediate sweetness that doesn't cloy—caramel, brown sugar, and hazelnut carry the entry. Mid-palate reveals body and depth, with a gentle malty warmth and faint spice notes that build gradually. Bitterness is restrained at 27 IBU, serving as a balancing backdrop rather than a prominent feature; the finish tilts toward dryness without harshness, allowing the alcohol warmth to emerge without overpowering the tasting experience.

◑ Finish

The finish extends moderately with a smooth fade, leaving behind lingering notes of roasted grain and subtle spice warmth. A pleasant dryness emerges on the back palate, balancing the initial sweetness without creating any astringency.

Warmer than most — 12–14°C. The fruity esters, spice and warming alcohol need room to breathe.

Goblet

The wide mouth and heavy base promote head formation and channel rich aromatics toward the nose. Traditional for Belgian strong ales.
