Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales was founded in 2004 by Ron and Laurie Jeffries in Dexter, Michigan, and became the first all-wild, oak-aged brewery in the United States. Brewer Ron Jeffries began studying brewing science in 1991 and started brewing professionally in 1995 before launching Jolly Pumpkin to pursue old-world rustic styles. All beers are unfiltered, unpasteurized, and aged in oak — including wine barrels, bourbon barrels, and large foudres — where naturally occurring microflora including Brettanomyces create complex, earthy, and funky flavor profiles. The brewery has earned numerous awards and is widely recognized as a pioneer of the American sour and wild ale movement. Founder Ron Jeffries passed away in 2024.
