HOPIQ SCORE

The Best British IPAs

94 beers from 51 breweries · Ranked by style authenticity — not marketing

These rankings are dynamic. As more people rate, match and like beers on hopIQ, community signals will increasingly shape the results alongside style authenticity and award recognition.

Britain names the style — the "I" in IPA stands for the pale ales originally exported from Burton-on-Trent to British India in the 19th century — but for most of the modern craft era Britain ceded the category to the United States. That reversed hard in the mid-2010s. Verdant Brewing (Cornwall), Cloudwater (Manchester), Deya (Cheltenham), Beak (Sussex), and Wylam (Newcastle) built a distinctly British hazy IPA movement, borrowing New England technique but developing a softer, less aggressively-sweet expression that has since become a global reference.

The hopIQ ranking reflects the modern breadth: 11 New England IPAs, 8 Double IPAs, 7 Session IPAs, and a handful of West Coast, Brut, and non-alcoholic entries sit alongside the mainstream American-style British IPAs. Mash Gang, the UK-based non-alcoholic craft specialist, appears with their Chug Hazy IPA — a category that would have been unthinkable at the height of BrewDog's original American-imitation phase. British IPA in 2026 has finally stopped chasing the US and started answering questions the US never asked.

How this ranking works
The hopIQ Score weights style authenticity (80%), user engagement (10%), notability (10%), and award history. Active, in-production beers only — non-alcoholic excluded. No paid placement — order follows the data alone. Ranking spans 94 beers from 51 breweries.

The nose opens with floral hop character—clean and inviting—backed by a subtle malt foundation that keeps the aroma grounded. On the palate, caramelized malt tones emerge alongside balanced bittering hops that neither dominate nor fade; the result is a medium-bodied frame that feels approachable despite the hop presence. The finish extends with a satisfying length, leaving the floral notes to linger. At 3.6%, this is a sessionable take on American IPA, lighter in alcohol but not in personality—ideal for an afternoon when you want hop character without heaviness.

The aroma opens with lemon zest and grapefruit, light enough to refresh without overwhelming. On the palate, that citrus line holds steady—orange and grapefruit in balance—while a smooth, drinkable body keeps the alcohol modest at 4.2%. The vibrant character makes this aperitif-friendly, a beer for conversation rather than contemplation, its full flavour compressed into a frame that invites a second glass.

Not the modern American fruit-bomb but the dry, earthy English original that had to survive weeks at sea in the 18th century. Faversham water, Kent hops, old story.

This West Country craft pours a hazy pale gold with a soft, white head that lingers invitingly. The aroma bursts with tropical and citrus character — ripe mango, tangerine, and a whisper of fresh pine — showcasing Verdant's signature hop-forward approach. On the palate, it is surprisingly full-bodied for its modest strength, delivering juicy stone fruit and bright grapefruit flavours underpinned by a gentle, biscuity malt base. Bitterness is restrained yet present, keeping things lively without overwhelming. The finish is clean, refreshing, and pleasantly dry — a sessionable IPA that punches well above its weight.

Poured from its 440ml can, it presents with a clear, inviting golden hue and a clean, well-formed white head. The double dry-hopping delivers a vivid piney, resinous aroma with bright herbal lift. On the palate it feels luscious and well-bodied, with hop character that is bold yet refined — subdued bitterness keeping things approachable rather than aggressive. The finish is clean and lingering, allowing the pine and resin to fade gracefully. A confident, balanced West Coast–leaning IPA that rewards those seeking depth without excess.
