Anspach & Hobday IPA

Tap to rate

One of the first beers Anspach & Hobday brewed, The IPA follows the West Coast of America with British malt and the hops Summit, Ekuanot and Enigma. Summit brings pithy citrus and a touch of dankness, Enigma adds over-ripe mango and melon, and a firm bitterness holds it together. Munich malt takes the place of crystal, which keeps the beer clean and bright. In 2024 it was CAMRA's Champion Beer of London and, nationally, won the IPA category and overall silver.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with pithy citrus notes from Summit hops, supported by a subtle earthy dankness. Enigma hops layer in stone fruit character—over-ripe mango and melon—creating a complex, fruity bouquet. Munich malt provides a clean, barely perceptible sweetness that keeps the profile fresh and focused.

◐ Taste

Entry is crisp and clean, with citrus bite leading into a mid-palate where tropical fruit sweetness—melon and mango—becomes more pronounced. A firm, structured bitterness emerges in the mid-palate and carries through, balancing the fruit without dominating. The Munich malt backbone stays restrained, allowing hops to take the lead while maintaining overall clarity and brightness.

◑ Finish

The finish is dry and medium in length, with lingering bitterness and subtle fruit notes fading gradually. A clean, slightly herbal aftertaste persists without any sticky residue.
