Anspach & Hobday Ordinary Bitter

Tap to rate

The Ordinary Bitter grew out of a cask bitter under 4 % that Anspach & Hobday brewed for the tenth birthday of the Cask/Craft Beer Co. pubs. Maris Otter, flaked barley, flaked maize and light and dark crystal malt give biscuit, caramel and a hint of burnt caramel. East Kent Goldings set the bitterness and, as a late addition, bring a fruitcake note, while Chinook in the whirlpool brings pine, spice and dark fruit. It won its category at CAMRA's London round in 2023 and 2024.

◐ Taste

Entry is clean and malty, with biscuit and toffee building through the mid-palate from the flaked barley and crystal malts. Bitterness (28 IBU) presents as refined and restrained rather than assertive, integrating seamlessly with the malt backbone and allowing the Goldings' dried fruit and Chinook's spice to emerge without dominating. The finish remains dry but never harsh.
