Anspach & Hobday Rauchbier

Tap to rate

The Rauchbier is Anspach & Hobday's homage to the smoked beers of Bamberg, brewed in London as a dark lager with barley kilned over open beechwood fires. It pours deep mahogany. Sweet beechwood smoke leads on the nose, followed by toasted malt and sweet-cured bacon on the palate. The brewery has made a smoked beer for about a decade and first brewed this one as a lager in 2020, conditioning it in horizontal tanks. It is sold in the autumn as part of the brewery's Oktoberfest series.

◐ Taste

The palate opens with pronounced sweet beechwood smoke that carries through the mid-palate, framed by soft toasted malt and a gentle sweetness. Light notes of cured pork fat and smoke persist, while low noble-hop bitterness (22 IBU) provides restraint rather than assertiveness. The body is medium and smooth, with the smoke character never becoming harsh or acrid.
