The brewery was renamed Wychwood in 1990, after the ancient medieval Wychwood Forest bordering Witney. Its flagship beer, Hobgoblin, was created in 1988 and became one of the best-known dark ales in the UK. In September 2023 Carlsberg Marston's Brewing Company announced the closure of the Wychwood Brewery site, with production ceasing by November 2023 due to the declining cask ale market.
