Sour beer encompasses two very different traditions that arrive at the same acidic destination by different routes. The Belgian Lambic and Gueuze tradition uses spontaneous fermentation — wild microorganisms from the Senne valley air, years of barrel aging — to produce beers of extraordinary complexity. The German Gose tradition uses controlled lactic acid fermentation in a wheat base to produce a refreshing, saline-accented sourness that predates Belgian lambic by centuries.
The hopIQ Score evaluates both traditions on their own terms. Ohne Bedenken Edelgose from Gosemanufaktur in Germany leads, followed by Reuben's Brews Gose from the United States. The top five then shifts to Belgian spontaneous fermentation: Lindemans Oude Gueuze Cuvée René, Boon Oude Geuze, and Girardin Gueuze 1882 Black Label — three producers whose Gueuzes are among the most consistently decorated sour beers at international competition.
All beers with style_family=Sour: Gueuze, Lambic, Gose, Berliner Weisse, Flanders Red Ale, American Wild Ale, and Oud Bruin. Each sub-style is scored against its own reference criteria — a Gose's saline, coriander-accented sourness is evaluated differently from a Gueuze's complex brett-and-organic-acid profile.
Not by a separate formula, but the competition medals that feed the hopIQ award score tend to favour traditional spontaneous styles. International competitions like the World Beer Cup and European Beer Star include dedicated Gueuze and Lambic categories with specialist judges who recognise traditional production. Kettle-soured beers compete in their own sub-categories.
Ohne Bedenken Edelgose scores highest on its sub-style's authenticity criteria and has accumulated award recognition in Gose-specific competition categories. The Belgian Gueuze producers at positions 3–5 (Lindemans, Boon, Girardin) have the deepest overall award histories in the sour category, but the #1 position is determined by how each beer scores against its own reference — Gose and Gueuze are judged on different criteria.
