Britain is an ale country. For a century after German-style lager arrived in the 1860s it remained a marginal, imported style — Britons drank bitter, mild, and porter. Lager's British breakthrough came in the 1970s and 80s with the rise of Carling, Fosters (brewed under licence), and eventually Stella Artois, which together defined mainstream British lager as light, cold, and interchangeable. That reputation still shapes how the style is perceived here.
The hopIQ ranking captures the modern reset. Camden Hells (Camden Town Brewery, since 2010) and Meantime London Pilsner led a craft-lager revival that put British lager on serious ground for the first time in decades. Alongside them sit smaller independents brewing Helles, Pilsner, Vienna Lager, and Bock with genuine attention to technique — proving that a country famous for cask ale can also brew lager competently, when it decides to try.
