Chinese lager carries an unlikely German lineage. Tsingtao Brewery was founded in 1903 in the German-leased port of Qingdao, using Bavarian equipment, German brewmasters, and — reportedly — mountain spring water from Laoshan. Over a century later the brewery is Chinese-owned, but the technical inheritance is visible: Tsingtao's core Pilsner remains one of the more style-authentic mainstream Asian lagers, closer to a German Pils than to the Japanese rice-adjunct style dominant elsewhere in East Asia.
