Spanish lager is defined by four brands: Mahou, San Miguel, Estrella Damm, and Alhambra. Between them they account for the overwhelming majority of beer poured in Spain, and their dominant style — a pale, low-bitterness, high-drinkability lager built for tapas culture and Mediterranean heat — has become the international shorthand for "Spanish beer." It is a style engineered for context: the caña served ice-cold at a bar counter, drunk in ten minutes, replaced immediately.
The hopIQ ranking captures the mainstream and also surfaces the smaller producers — Alhambra Reserva 1925, Ambar Especial, and a growing craft scene from Barcelona, Madrid, and the Basque Country — where more assertive Pilsners, Munich-style Helles, and even Bock experiments are being brewed. Spanish lager is less monolithic than the four big brands suggest; the score rewards precision and awards, and the ranking reflects both the flagships and the outliers.
How this ranking works
The hopIQ Score weights style authenticity (80%), user engagement (10%), notability (10%), and award history. Active, in-production beers only — non-alcoholic excluded. No paid placement — order follows the data alone. Ranking spans 30 beers from 17 breweries.
