Known for a full range of styles

Oud Beersel is a lambic blendery in Beersel, ten kilometres southwest of Brussels. Henri Vandervelden I started it in 1882; his grandson Henri gave it the name Oud Beersel in 1954, set against what he called "New Brussels". When four generations of the family stopped at the end of 2002, Gert Christiaens, a regular who heard of the closure at a Brussels bar, took it on, learned the craft alongside Henri and reopened the brewery in November 2005 with the tripel Bersalis. The wort is brewed to Oud Beersel's recipe at a partner brewery; spontaneous fermentation, years of ageing in around thirty foeders and many smaller casks, blending, fruit lambics, infusions and bottling happen in Beersel. Oude Geuze and Oude Kriek carry EU traditional speciality status, and Schaarbeek cherry trees grow in the orchard behind the brewery.

Brewery DNA

The recurring character behind the beers

Oud Beersel brew within a single family — the differences sit in how, not what.

How we measure this

Two thresholds are at work here:

  • The signature list shows notes that recur in at least 6% of this brewery's beers. A low bar — enough to flag a pattern, not high enough to call it an exclusive trait.
  • The peer comparison below shows only notes where this brewery's coverage differs from similar breweries by at least 20 percentage points. A higher bar — enough to call a real difference, not a nudge.

A note can appear on the signature list without appearing in the peer comparison: it recurs here, but similar breweries do the same thing.
