Ale styles remain marginal in a market defined for over a century by Feldschlösschen, Cardinal, Calanda, and Eichhof — pale Bavarian- and Czech-influenced lagers that reflect the country's trilingual borders. The Kartell (industry cartel) that regulated Swiss brewing until 1991 further consolidated the category, leaving lager the near-uncontested default well into the current century.
