HOPIQ SCORE

The Best Swiss Lagers

17 beers from 10 breweries · Ranked by style authenticity — not marketing

These rankings are dynamic. As more people rate, match and like beers on hopIQ, community signals will increasingly shape the results alongside style authenticity and award recognition.

Swiss beer is lager. Ale styles remain marginal in a market defined for over a century by Feldschlösschen, Cardinal, Calanda, and Eichhof — pale Bavarian- and Czech-influenced lagers that reflect the country's trilingual borders. The Kartell (industry cartel) that regulated Swiss brewing until 1991 further consolidated the category, leaving lager the near-uncontested default well into the current century.

The hopIQ ranking captures both the mainstream and the smaller cantonal producers that have emerged since deregulation. Craft lager in Switzerland leans strongly toward German and Czech references rather than American ones — geographically and culturally, Bavarian and Bohemian brewing traditions are closer neighbours than the American craft movement. Swiss craft Pilsner and Helles compete internationally at the European Beer Star, and appear on this ranking alongside the flagships.

How this ranking works
The hopIQ Score weights style authenticity (80%), user engagement (10%), notability (10%), and award history. Active, in-production beers only — non-alcoholic excluded. No paid placement — order follows the data alone. Ranking spans 17 beers from 10 breweries.
