Alpenbier

Tap to rate

Naturally cloudy with a fruity yeast note: caramelised organic barley malt and organic hops, left unfiltered so the yeast haze shapes the colour. It has 5.0% ABV. The name goes back to the Alpine Initiative of 1989, whose committee asked the brewery for a promotional beer in 1991. The brewery's own beer in Knospe quality followed in 1999.

Tasting Notes

AI-generated sensory profile for Alpenbier

◎ Appearance

Pale golden with a characteristic natural haze from suspended yeast, creating a soft, cloudy veil throughout the glass. The head forms with modest retention, displaying fine bubbles that cling intermittently to the glass walls. The unfiltered nature defines the beer's visual identity—clarity is deliberately sacrificed for the living yeast character that shapes both appearance and flavour.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with fruity esters from the yeast, offering soft stone-fruit and subtle apple notes. Caramelised barley malt provides a gentle sweetness in the background, complemented by delicate organic hop character—herbal and understated rather than assertive. The overall aromatic profile remains inviting and approachable, with no sharp edges.

◐ Taste

The palate enters smooth and malty, with caramel sweetness and a bready undertone from the organic grain bill. Mid-palate develops gentle fruitiness and a subtle yeasty texture that enhances roundness rather than cloudiness. Bitterness remains restrained at 25 IBU, allowing the malt and yeast character to dominate; the finish is clean and lightly crisp, with no harsh aftertaste.

◑ Finish
