HOPIQ SCORE

The Best American Dark Beers

27 beers from 26 breweries · Ranked by style authenticity — not marketing

These rankings are dynamic. As more people rate, match and like beers on hopIQ, community signals will increasingly shape the results alongside style authenticity and award recognition.

American dark beer sits between three traditions. Of the 27 US dark beers on this ranking, 10 are American Brown Ale — the specifically American craft sub-style that Big Sky's Moose Drool and Surly Bender helped define — accounting for 37% of the category. Another 7 are German-tradition (4 Schwarzbier, 3 Munich Dunkel — American craft brewers building bottom-fermented dark lagers to European precision). Four are English-tradition (2 English Mild Ale, 1 English Mild, 1 English Brown Ale) — session-strength British-style dark ales that a handful of American breweries still brew with genuine style-fit. The remainder includes one-offs like Lazy Magnolia's Southern Pecan (Mississippi pecan brown), Barrel-Aged Dark Ale, and one entry classified as Oklahoma Choc Beer — a historical Native American brewing style with Chickasaw and Choctaw lineage that virtually disappeared and is brewed by only one commercial producer.

The hopIQ ranking captures 26 distinct breweries producing these 27 beers: near-perfect brewery diversity for the category. American Brown Ales from Big Sky (Moose Drool), Surly (Bender), and Hill Farmstead (George — Vermont, often cited as one of the best American Brown Ales brewed) appear in the top group alongside English-Mild-referencing entries (Yards Brawler from Philadelphia), long-tradition dark lagers (Schell's Dark from Minnesota, one of the oldest American breweries continuously brewing dark lager), and Black Lagers (New Belgium 1554). American dark beer is small in market share but stylistically among the widest single-country dark rankings anywhere.

How this ranking works
The hopIQ Score weights style authenticity (80%), user engagement (10%), notability (10%), and award history. Active, in-production beers only — non-alcoholic excluded. No paid placement — order follows the data alone. Ranking spans 27 beers from 26 breweries.
