Surly Bender pours a rich mahogany to dark brown color with excellent clarity. A creamy tan head forms readily and persists nicely, indicating proper carbonation and good head retention. The beer displays an inviting, deep copper-tinged brown that suggests the oatmeal and roasted malts at work.

◌ Aroma

The nose leads with warm roasted malt and subtle coffee notes, followed by gentle chocolate and caramel undertones. Oatmeal character adds a soft, grainy sweetness without assertiveness. Minimal hop presence allows the malt complexity to shine through cleanly.

Entry is smooth and creamy with prominent caramel and nutty malt flavors that coat the palate. The mid-palate develops roasted chocolate and dark fruit notes, while the medium body provides excellent balance without heaviness. Bitterness remains restrained at 35 IBUs, allowing malt sweetness to dominate.
