Phineas DeMink, Sara DeMink and Allen "Skip" Yahn founded Southern Tier in 2002 in the woods outside Lakewood, New York, on equipment from the Old Saddleback Brewing Co. in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. The grand opening on April 7, 2003 featured an IPA, Pilsner, Mild and Porter. Since 2004 the Blackwater Series has pushed dessert stouts, and today a 110-barrel Steinecker brewhouse from Germany anchors the campus.
