Stone & Wood was started in Byron Bay in 2008 by three brewers who had come out of a large Australian brewing group, beginning with a 25-hectolitre plant in the town's industrial estate. A second, larger brewery followed in Murwillumbah in 2014. Pacific Ale grew from a local draught beer into one of the most recognised Australian ales and pulled a whole category of hazy, fruit-driven pale ales along behind it. Both sites are run carbon neutral and the company is a certified B Corp. Since 2021 it has belonged to Lion, part of Kirin.
