Flensburger Brauerei was founded on 6 September 1888 by five local merchants as the Flensburger Export-Brauerei and merged in 1919 with the older Actien-Brauerei in the same town. The Petersen family bought in during the 1920s, and their descendants, the Dethleffsen-Petersen family, still hold the majority, so the brewery belongs to no group. It brews at Munketoft 12 in Flensburg, close to the Danish border, using water from its own glacial spring and coastal barley from Schleswig-Holstein, and exports to around 35 countries.
