Les Brasseurs du Nord has brewed under the Boréale name in the Laurentians north of Montreal since 1987, when Laura Urtnowski and Bernard Morin turned a student home-brewing sideline into a commercial brewery. The house released Quebec's first red ale in 1988 and moved from Saint-Jérôme to its present Blainville site in 1994. The Fonds de solidarité FTQ took majority ownership in 2013. The range covers the classics, the Artisan series, alcohol-free beers and a rotating Épisode programme, with taprooms in Blainville and Montreal.

Their signature has to hold across very different styles — which makes the notes that do recur more telling, not less.

How they compare
Each beer measured against others of its own style, then averaged across the range. Compared with the wider catalogue across breweries making similar styles.

Across 35 beers in 9 style families, none of Les Brasseurs du Nord's characters carry through the whole range — the mix of styles they brew is the signature here.
