Export India Porter

Tap to rate

Built on mid-nineteenth-century London porter recipes brewed for export, with the sharp edge of black malt softened by chocolate and crystal malts. Unlike those originals it is late-hopped and dry-hopped in the manner of the brewery's pale ales, usually with American varieties and occasionally with British ones. The result is deeply coloured and highly carbonated: roast coffee, dark chocolate and dark fruit, set against hop notes that range by batch from resinous pine and citrus peel to berry and spice.

◌ Aroma

The nose leads with roasted coffee and dark chocolate, softened by subtle notes of dark stone fruit. Behind these sits a distinctive hop character that varies by batch—ranging from resinous pine and citrus peel to darker berry and spice notes. The late-hop and dry-hop additions speak clearly without overwhelming the roasted malt foundation.

◐ Taste

The palate opens with a balance of coffee and cocoa, anchored by the softening effect of crystal and chocolate malts. Mid-palate brings the hop character into sharp focus—either piney and citric or spiced and berry-toned depending on the batch—cutting against the darker malt sweetness. The 33 IBUs provide a dry, clean bitterness that prevents cloying and extends through the finish.

◑ Finish

The finish is clean and persistent, with hop bitterness and roasted grain lingering on the palate. Dark fruit and a suggestion of resiny spice trail away gradually, leaving the mouth refreshed rather than sticky.

Serve at 10–13°C. Too cold mutes the roasted complexity that makes a good porter worth drinking slowly.
