Imperial Brown Stout London 1856
Brewed to a London recipe from 1856 for the kind of stout that later became known as Russian imperial stout. Despite the name the beer is black. It is smooth and rounded rather than aggressive: cocoa on the nose, then cream, chocolate and dark fruit with a touch of plum and sour berry. The finish is long, with herbal bitterness and just enough light roast to hold it together. With age the bitterness softens and the fruit deepens.
