Imperial Brown Stout London 1856

◎ Aussehen

Deep black in color with minimal light transmission, presenting the hallmark opacity of a fully developed Imperial Stout. The head forms dense and persistent, settling into a fine collar with deliberate lacing around the glass. Carbonation is moderate, creating a slow, deliberate rise that reflects the beer's weighty character.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with distinct cocoa powder and roasted grain, followed by creamy, chocolate-forward notes that soften the intensity of the dark malt. Underneath lies a subtle dark fruit character—plum and sour berry emerge in the mid-ground, adding complexity without overwhelming the composed profile. A gentle herbal undertone suggests the noble hops' contribution to the overall aromatic balance.

◐ Geschmack

The palate unfolds smoothly despite the beer's full body and 9.6% alcohol. Chocolate and cream dominate the mid-palate, while dark fruit notes—particularly plum and sour berries—provide counterpoint and depth. A measured herbal bitterness (65 IBU) emerges in the middle, neither aggressive nor subdued, anchored by a light roast character that prevents the sweetness from becoming cloying.

◑ Abgang

The finish extends long, with the herbal bitterness persisting gently into the aftertaste while the light roast continues to frame and support. As the beer ages, this bitterness softens further, allowing the dark fruit character to deepen and broaden, rewarding cellaring.
