Haynau's Retreat

Tap to rate

A black lager brewed with Newbarns Brewery after a London recipe from 1930. The method is unusual: part of the first runnings was boiled down to a syrup while the rest of the wort was held back, then both were combined and boiled. The result is very roasty and full for the style, clean in the way of a lager, with the richness of the reduced wort carried through to the end.

◌ Aroma

Roasted grain and dark chocolate dominate the nose, with a subtle cocoa powder undertone that speaks to the concentrated malt bill. Clean lager character runs through without esters or phenolics, allowing the malt-driven profile to remain crisp and focused. A whisper of noble hop restraint keeps the aroma from becoming heavy.

◐ Taste

The palate opens with robust roasted malt and a full body that defies the typical lightness of schwarzbier. The reduction method imparts a syrupy richness that carries malt-forward depth through the mid-palate without cloying sweetness. Bitterness arrives measured at 25 IBU, offering gentle restraint that balances rather than dominates, while the finish remains remarkably dry for the style's richness.

◑ Finish

The finish persists with a drying roasted malt impression that lingers pleasantly on the palate. Clean lager character carries through to the end, leaving no residual sweetness or harsh edges.
