De Havezathe

Tap to rate

A winter beer for sitting by the fire: dark and full, with notes of caramel, orange and nuts. At Mommeriete the fire is real: when the Kelders expanded their 1857 skippers' cafe, they extended the roof to make a big canopy with an open fireplace beneath it. Brewed in the copper kettles in Gramsbergen, served at about 10 °C.

◌ Aroma

The nose leads with toasted hazelnut and almond, underpinned by rich caramel sweetness and a subtle dried orange peel note. Warm Maillard character from the darker malts provides an earthy foundation, while a touch of spice suggests noble hops used sparingly. The overall impression is warming and inviting—a beer meant for an evening by the fire.

◐ Taste

The palate opens with pronounced caramel malt sweetness and walnut nuttiness, evolving into notes of dried stone fruit and subtle bitter orange in the mid-palate. The 30 IBU bitterness is restrained and refined, never harsh, allowing the malty complexity to dominate. The finish carries a gentle roasted character with lingering sweetness.

◑ Finish

The finish is long and warming, with caramel and nut notes persisting gently on the palate. A slight drying quality from the noble hops provides balance without overpowering the residual malt sweetness.

Serve at 6–8°C

Cold enough to sharpen the hop aroma without numbing the palate. Around 7–9°C keeps the citrus and pine vivid without losing bitterness definition.

Pint glass

The classic — versatile, comfortable to hold and keeps the beer cool. No frills, no distractions: just the beer.

Drink fresh — hop aroma fades fast. Best within 3 months of canning or bottling.

What is a Ale?

India Pale Ales are hop-forward ales with ABV typically 5.5–7.5% and IBU 40–70+. Bold citrus, pine or tropical aromas alongside firm bitterness and a clean dry finish.
