De Vaandrig

Tap to rate

A smoked Bock: caramel and roasted malt meet smoke from smoked malt, and the smoke is woven into the other flavours. Mommeriete has brewed smoked beer since its early years on the Groote Scheere estate in Holthone, just 7 km from the Kelders' home, back when the style was completely unknown in the area. Best at about 7 °C.

◌ Aroma

Smoke dominates the nose with an unmistakable presence, layered seamlessly with roasted Malz and deep caramel sweetness. There is no harshness to the smoke—it integrates as part of the malt profile rather than standing apart. The overall impression is complex and warming, with subtle hints of toasted grain beneath.

◐ Taste

Smoke and roasted character build immediately on the palate, creating a full-bodied entry that feels rich and smooth despite the substantial Malz base. Caramel sweetness threads through the mid-palate, balancing the smoke and roast without clashing. Bitterness is restrained at 25 IBU, allowing the smoked and malty character to develop fully; the finish carries the smoke into a slightly boozy, warming conclusion.

◑ Finish

The finish is long and warming, with smoke and roasted Malz lingering on the palate and in the throat. Subtle alcohol warmth emerges in the aftertaste, complementing the smoky character rather than overwhelming it.
