Lorton Ale

United Kingdom·Strong Imperial Ale
Tap to rate

Seville marmalade, Christmas spices and a real treacle depth, balanced by hints of spice from the hops. Lorton Ale is a rich, mahogany imperial ale of 8.4 %, revived from archive letters and recipes and brewed with modern malts and hops. Jennings moved from the village of Lorton to Cockermouth in 1874, and for 46 years before that the soft Lakeland water there made stronger, darker, sweeter ales.

◎ Appearance

A deep mahogany hue, rich and inviting with excellent clarity. The dense, cream-colored head builds confidently and maintains strong adhesion to the glass walls, evidence of the ale's fullness and protein content. Carbonation is moderate and well-integrated, supporting a persistent foam collar throughout the drinking experience.

◌ Aroma

Assertive aromatics lead with Seville orange marmalade and candied peel, underpinned by warming Christmas spices—cinnamon and allspice—that speak to the archival inspiration. Behind these sits a pronounced treacle sweetness with subtle dark fruit notes (prune, fig), while restrained noble hop character adds a gentle herbal and slightly resinous backbone without overwhelming the malt-driven profile.

The palate opens rich and full-bodied, with caramelized malt sweetness meeting citrus notes that echo the nose. Mid-palate develops a pleasant spiced warmth—cinnamon and clove—alongside subtle bitter hops that prevent cloying buildup. The 8.4% alcohol sits comfortably integrated, contributing to a smooth, slightly warming sensation without harsh spirit notes.

The finish is long and warming, with lingering spice and a gentle orange zest fade underscored by a modest dry hop bite. The treacle depth retreats gracefully, leaving behind a pleasant, slightly boozy warmth that invites another sip.
