Duke Wilhelm V of Bavaria founded the Hofbräuhaus in 1589 as the brewery of the ducal court, and it remains a state-owned enterprise of the Free State of Bavaria. For almost two centuries it held the privilege to brew wheat beer, and Munich's first bock beer came from its kettles in 1614. Today the brewery operates in Munich-Riem, produced around 349,000 hectolitres in 2022, sells under the umbrella brand Hofbräu München and is one of the six breweries pouring at the Oktoberfest.
