Modus Brewing was founded in 2014 by Jaz and Grant Wearin in Mona Vale on Sydney's Northern Beaches, in a warehouse that had previously housed an illegal hydroponic grow operation – the story behind its first flagship, Former Tenant. Trading as Modus Operandi Brewing Co. in its early years, it won the national craft beer title within months of opening. In 2021 a second brewery with a large taproom and about ten times the original capacity opened in Merewether, Newcastle. The business is independent and family-owned.
