🌍 Germany · Doppelbock · One of 36 Doppelbocks in hopIQ

The Kathrein-Bock is the brewery's pale winter Doppelbock, named after St Catherine's Day and sold from November. At 18.6 °P it pours honey-golden with a fine white head. The nose shows pale malt, a little apple and a trace of honey. The body is full, between semi-sweet and half-dry, with light caramel and white bread, while Spalt aroma hops add a herbal, spicy note and a firm bitterness that keeps the malt in check. The warmth of the alcohol appears only gradually.

Aroma

The nose opens with gentle pale malt character—soft, biscuity notes without heaviness—accompanied by a delicate apple note and subtle honey whisper that suggests the beer's residual sweetness. Spalt hops bring a measured herbal and spicy undertone that prevents the malt from dominating the aromatic profile. The alcohol warmth is barely perceptible at first, emerging only on repeated nosing.

Taste

Entry is full-bodied and semi-sweet, with white bread and light caramel flavors establishing a soft malty foundation. The mid-palate maintains that breadiness while Spalt hops inject a firm, herbal-spicy bitterness that balances the underlying sweetness with authority. The interplay between malt and hops remains in equilibrium—neither dominates—while the alcohol warmth builds gradually toward the finish, adding structure without harshness.
