Gueuze Lou Pepe

Tap to rate

A gueuze built only from two-year lambics, often from barrels that previously held nothing but wine. No young lambic goes into the blend; the second fermentation runs on added liquid sucrose, which the brewery says lets more intense fruit come through. Since all the lambic comes from one brewing season, each Lou Pepe carries a vintage. The name is what the Van Roy grandsons call their grandfather Jean-Pierre.

Tasting Notes

AI-generated sensory profile for Gueuze Lou Pepe

◎ Appearance

Lou Pepe presents a pale golden hue with slight cloudiness from the wild fermentation and age-derived turbidity. The head forms quickly but settles to a thin, persistent lacing that clings to the glass. Carbonation is lively and fine, creating a restless effervescence throughout.

◌ Aroma

The nose leads with bright, dried stone fruit—apricot and lemon zest—layered beneath earthy, funky notes from Brettanomyces and extended aging. A subtle musty, cellar-like quality emerges, mingling with faint hints of hay and a gentle acidity that sharpens the aromatic profile. Vinous undertones suggest the wine-barrel heritage without dominating.

◐ Taste

The palate opens sharp and sour, with a dry attack that dominates the entry. Mid-palate reveals the layered fruit character—dried apple, pear skin, and white peach—while a restrained funkiness adds complexity without harshness. The finish remains lean and crisp, with lingering acidity and a gentle astringency that balances the residual fruit.

The aftertaste extends with persistent sourness and dryness, fading gradually into a clean, vinous fade. No sweetness or cloying character remains; instead, a mineral, slightly peppery note lingers on the tongue.
