Willie the Boatman was founded in 2012 by Nick Newey and Pat McInerney, two home brewers from Sydney's Inner West. Their first beers reached the market in 2014, and a taproom opened in St Peters in 2015 in Precinct 75, a former paint factory. In late 2025 the venue moved to a smaller space within the complex. The name recalls William Kerr, a convict who rowed people across the Cooks River in the 1830s. Since March 2024 the business has belonged to the UK-based Powder Monkey Group, alongside Southern Highlands, Akasha and Wayward.
