Known for a full range of styles

Lough Gill Brewery was founded in 2016 by James and Valerie Ward in Sligo and brought brewing back to a town that once had five breweries. Name and water come from the nearby lake, and the first beer, a red ale, took up the Anderson family's 19th-century brewing tradition. The brewery works in the Cleveragh district and covers a wide span: pale ales and IPAs for everyday drinking on one side, pastry sours and imperial stouts on the other, many of the latter aged for years in whiskey, wine and brandy casks. Mead is made here as well.

How we measure this

Two thresholds are at work here:

  • The signature list shows notes that recur in at least 6% of this brewery's beers. A low bar — enough to flag a pattern, not high enough to call it an exclusive trait.
  • The peer comparison below shows only notes where this brewery's coverage differs from similar breweries by at least 20 percentage points. A higher bar — enough to call a real difference, not a nudge.

A note can appear on the signature list without appearing in the peer comparison: it recurs here, but similar breweries do the same thing.
