High King

Tap to rate

High King is a barley wine that went through a very long fermentation and slow maturation in Madeira barrels. It is served still: no head and no carbonation. The nose recalls an imperial stout, the colour a whiskey, the taste a sherry. Dried fruit and Madeira notes rest on a layer of wood, with a trace of fresh red fruit and a dry sweetness reminiscent of honey. At 20 % it stands far outside the usual range of beer.

Tasting Notes

AI-generated sensory profile for High King

◎ Appearance

Deep amber to chestnut brown, recalling aged whiskey rather than typical beer. The liquid is still and flat, presented without carbonation or foam—a deliberately austere presentation that emphasizes its wine-like maturity. Clarity is excellent, revealing the beer's sophisticated barrel aging.

◌ Aroma

The nose evokes an imperial stout's depth while remaining distinctly vinous. Madeira barrel influence dominates, releasing notes of oxidative sweetness and fortified wine character. Beneath lie dried stone fruits, subtle oak wood, and a trace of fresh red berry aromatics that hint at complexity beyond the barrel.

◐ Taste

Arrival is full and warming, carrying honey-like sweetness tempered by the beer's 50 IBU and dry barrel influence. Mid-palate layers dried fruit, sherry notes, and well-integrated wood tannins without astringency. The 20% ABV manifests as a smooth, spirit-like warmth that amplifies perceived sweetness while maintaining surprising balance.

◑ Finish

The finish is long and gently drying, with Madeira oak persisting into the aftertaste. Residual honey-sweetness and red fruit whisper fade slowly, leaving a refined, wine-like conclusion.
