Black Barley

◎ Appearance

Deep mahogany to near-black in the glass, with excellent clarity despite the beer's substantial age and body. The head is dense and persistent, laying down fine lacing with each sip. Carbonation is restrained, appropriate for a barrel-aged barleywine of this weight.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with dried dark fruits—raisins and prunes—layered beneath caramel and toffee notes from prolonged Oloroso contact. Underlying malz character provides earthy sweetness, with subtle alcohol warmth evident but not sharp. Oak and wine-barrel influence are present as supporting notes rather than dominators.

◐ Taste

The palate is full and coating, with caramel and dark-fruit character building from the first sip. Malty richness dominates the mid-palate, balanced by 60 IBUs of restrained bitterness that prevents cloying. Alcohol strength (14% ABV) integrates smoothly, warming without harshness, while the wine-barrel aging contributes subtle dried-fruit and wood tannins that extend into the swallow.

◑ Finish

The finish is long and warming, with lingering caramel and dark-fruit notes fading gradually into subtle oak and wine tannins. A pleasant drying sensation builds in the back of the palate, inviting another sip.
