Super Hornet

Black Hops Brewing
Tap to rate
🌍 Australia · Double IPA · One of 140 Double IPAs in hopIQ

A stronger version of the Hornet IPA, first brewed in the Burleigh taproom in 2016. Citrus and resinous pine rise from the glass before the first sip, joined by tropical fruit on the palate. Vienna and Caramel Munich malts supply a noticeable toffee and bready sweetness that holds the high bitterness in check. The bitterness is heavy and lingering, with a warming alcohol note in the finish. Hops include Dr Rudi, Amarillo, Citra, Columbus, Simcoe and Vic Secret.

Taste

The palate opens with bold hop bitterness that builds steadily through the mid-palate, reinforced by the dry, resinous character of Dr Rudi, Columbus, and Simcoe hops. Caramel malt sweetness and a noticeable bready note provide essential balance, preventing the beer from becoming one-dimensional. Amarillo and Citra add bright citric edges that linger alongside the heavy, lingering bitterness.

Finish

The finish is dry, assertive, and enduring, with a warming alcohol note that becomes increasingly evident as the beer warms slightly. Residual pine and citrus dryness persist well into the aftertaste, alongside a fading toffee sweetness.

About Double IPA

Style guide · what to expect · how to find alternatives

What is a Double IPA?

IPAs are hop-forward ales with 5.5–7.5% ABV and IBU 40–70+. Bold hop aroma — citrus, tropical, resinous — with firm bitterness and a dry, clean finish.

Finding a similar Double IPA

hopIQ matches by flavor profile — not just style label. A beer with the same bitter, resinous, piney character as Super Hornet will score highly even if brewed in a different country or under a different sub-style name.
