🌍 Australia · Session IPA · One of 53 Session IPAs in hopIQ

The session-strength companion to Crankshaft, brewed with the same hop bill of Centennial, Citra, Simcoe and Ekuanot. Resinous pine and juicy citrus come through clearly, and the bitterness is nearly as high as in the full-strength beer. Traditional ale malt and Voodoo malt supply what body 3.2 percent allows, leaving a lean, dry finish in which the hop aroma outweighs the malt.

Aroma

The nose leads with resinous pine and fresh citrus—classic Centennial and Simcoe character—layered with herbal Ekuanot complexity. Beneath the hop-forward aromatics lies a restrained Malz foundation, allowing the four-variety blend to dominate without overshadowing. The overall impression is clean, mineral-forward, and sharply defined.

Taste

Entry is crisp and bone-dry, with immediate hop bitterness (32 IBU) delivering punch despite the low alcohol. Mid-palate balances juicy citrus against a lean, traditional Malz base reinforced by subtle Voodoo character; the mouthfeel remains light and refreshing rather than thin. Bitterness persists as a clean, resinous backbone throughout.

Finish

The finish is dry and lingering, with hop aroma outlasting any Malz sweetness. Resinous pine and subtle citrus fade gradually, leaving a bracing, pleasantly bitter aftertaste.

Serve & Enjoy

How to get the most out of Half Cranked

Serve at 7–10°C
Refrigerate, then rest 2 min

Serve well-chilled. Session IPAs are at their best cold — the lower ABV means less warmth to balance the hops.

Tulip glass
Recommended for this style

The curved shape concentrates hop aromas and supports a thick head. Essential for aromatic ales and IPAs where the nose is half the experience.

Drink fresh. Session IPAs are brewed to be consumed young — the hops are at their best now.

About Session IPA

Style guide · what to expect · how to find alternatives

What is a Session IPA?

IPAs are hop-forward ales with 5.5–7.5% ABV and IBU 40–70+. Bold hop aroma — citrus, tropical, resinous — with firm bitterness and a dry, clean finish.

Finding a similar Session IPA

hopIQ matches by flavor profile — not just style label. A beer with the same resinous, piney, hoppy character as Half Cranked will score highly even if brewed in a different country or under a different sub-style name.
