🌍 Australia · American Brown Ale · One of 18 American Brown Ales in hopIQ

The first beer ever brewed at BentSpoke, repeated every year since and put into cans for the first time in 2024, for the brewery's tenth anniversary. Chocolate, dark roasted and crystal malt with rolled oats give a rolling roast character, dark toffee and a nutty sweetness, while Citra and Cascade layer orange and grapefruit peel with a touch of pine over the top. At 46 IBU the hopping runs firmer than the style usually does.

Tasting Notes

AI-generated sensory profile for Dick Tracy

Deep amber-brown with a red-tinted hue characteristic of the SRM 20 range. The head forms with moderate density and displays good retention, leaving fine lacing down the glass. Clarity is clean and translucent, with active carbonation visible in the form of steady bubbles.

Aroma

Prominent roasted and chocolate malt character forms the foundation, underscored by a subtle nuttiness from the rolled oats addition. Citrus peel—orange and grapefruit—emerges in the middle register, layered with restrained pine notes that prevent the hop character from dominating. The overall impression is balanced between malt-driven warmth and hop-derived brightness.

Taste

Entry reveals dark toffee and nutty sweetness characteristic of the Malz bill, with the rolled oats contributing a subtle creamy smoothness. Mid-palate builds with firmer bitterness than the style typically carries—the 46 IBU evident as a persistent edge that frames the malt sweetness rather than overwhelming it. Grapefruit and orange citrus notes integrate cleanly into the finish, supported by a touch of resinous pine.

Finish

Medium-length finish with lingering roasted notes and gentle bitterness that fades gradually. The aftertaste dries toward bitter citrus peel and a faint piney resinousness.
