The Norbertine abbey of Grimbergen, just north of Brussels, was founded in 1128 by Norbert of Xanten, and its canons brewed on site until the French Revolution; in 1798 the brewing kettles were sold at public auction. In 1958 the Maes brewery launched a commercial beer under the Grimbergen name with the canons' consent. Since 2008 the brand has belonged to the Carlsberg Group, while Alken-Maes holds the licence for Belgium. In 2021 a microbrewery reopened inside the monastery walls for limited releases. The phoenix on the label is the community's emblem of rebirth.
