The brewery works in Mater, a village within Oudenaarde in the Flemish Ardennes, and traces its roots to 1545. Back then bailiff Joos Roman ran the coaching inn De Clocke on the trade route between Germany and France, with a farm, mill, malt house and brewhouse. Brewing became the main business only over later generations. The family still owns the company, now run by Carlo and Lode as the fourteenth generation. Pils carried the house after the war; Louis Roman later turned it toward top-fermented specialty ales such as Sloeber, Ename and Gentse Strop.
