Lindemans Oude Kriek Cuvée René

Tap to rate

Whole Schaarbeekse sour cherries, a variety traditionally grown around Brussels, spend at least six months in a blend of one- and three-year-old lambic before the beer is corked for a second fermentation. Ripe cherries, frangipane and marzipan dominate the aroma; the palate adds red fruit and a sweet-sour attack, then fresh tartness and a slightly dry, lingering finish. Ruby red, 7 % ABV; Lindemans' first Oude Kriek dates from 1961.

A deep ruby red hue with brilliant clarity, presenting the characteristic translucence of a well-made kriek. ◌ Aroma

The nose opens with ripe Schaarbeekse cherry at the forefront, supported by pronounced almond and marzipan notes that suggest pastry shop and stone fruit confiture. Beneath these immediate sensory markers lies a subtle funky undercurrent—the signature of long-aged lambic—adding complexity without dominating. The overall aromatic profile balances fruit-forward accessibility with the distinct terroir of Brussels-area sour cherries.

◐ Taste

Entry delivers a sweet-sour attack that breaks immediately into fresh red fruit and bright tartness, the acid cutting through the cherry's natural sweetness. Mid-palate carries layers of dark fruit and subtle nuttiness as the lambic's aged character asserts itself. The finish turns distinctly dry and crisp, with lingering tartness that cleanses the palate while a whisper of frangipane fades into the background.

◑ Finish

The aftertaste persists with fresh acidity and a slightly dry sensation, neither cloying nor austere. Cherry notes and almond echo softly as the carbonation's gentle prickle subsides.
