Great Western Brewing Company works out of a 1927 brick brewery on 2nd Avenue in Saskatoon that has carried five names, running from Hub City Brewing through Western Canada Brewing and Drewry's to Carling O'Keefe. When Molson planned to close the plant in 1989, sixteen employees pooled their own money and bought it, which is where the Original 16 brand name comes from. The house has stayed independent since, remains the only continuously operating provincial brewery in Saskatchewan, and builds almost everything it makes on two-row prairie barley grown in Western Canada.
