Sternquell-Brauerei was founded on October 23, 1857 as a joint-stock brewery in Plauen, Vogtland, Saxony, established to meet rising demand and counter imports of Bavarian beer. By 1910 annual production had reached 120,000 hectoliters. After World War II the brewery was nationalized under East Germany's GDR and renamed Sternquell-Brauerei, with the current brand name first used in 1949. Following German reunification, the GmbH was re-founded in 1990 and acquired by Kulmbacher Brauerei, making Sternquell a subsidiary within the Paulaner Brauerei Gruppe. In 2016, production relocated to a modern facility in Plauen-Neuensalz.
