Brauerei Trunk sits directly behind the Basilica of Vierzehnheiligen above Bad Staffelstein in Upper Franconia, a pilgrimage site where beer has been brewed since 1803. The Trunk family took over the old monastery brewery in 1989, and in 2004 the brewhouse was rebuilt from scratch by a Bamberg manufacturer. Brewmaster Andreas, son of the purchasing family, uses malts from Kulmbach, Bamberg and Mellrichstadt, hops from the Hallertau, Spalt and Tettnang and a house yeast culture. The Nothelfer brand name refers to the Fourteen Holy Helpers venerated in the basilica.
