Tap to rate

The third barrel version of the brewery's 21 °P barley wine, full in its malt body and mild in bitterness. Dree was aged for 18 months in a barrel that had held plum brandy. The result is fruity: plum and green apple, joined by a nutty note and a fine acidity reminiscent of balsamic vinegar. At 12.9 % it is the strongest of the three.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with ripe plum and green apple notes, fruit-forward from the 18-month barrel age in plum brandy wood. Underlying is a subtle nuttiness—hazelnut or walnut—that adds complexity without dominating. A fine acidity cuts through, reminiscent of aged balsamic, lifting the overall impression from merely rich to layered and contemplative.

◐ Taste

Entry is full and malty, with substantial caramel and toffee character from the 21 °P grist, yet restrained—the plum brandy barrel lends a gentle stone-fruit sweetness rather than aggressive oak. Midpalate expands into nutty warmth with that characteristic vinegar-like acidity threading through. At 50 IBUs, bitterness arrives mild and polished, never harsh, allowing the fruit and malt to remain the focal point.

◑ Finish

The finish is lengthy and warming, with lingering fruit notes and a drying, slightly astringent quality from the acidity and residual tannins from wood contact. The 12.9% ABV provides gentle heat on the back of the palate, fading into a contemplative, dry aftertaste.
