🌍 Australia · Rauchbier · One of 10 Rauchbiers in hopIQ

Close to half the grain bill is beechwood-smoked malt from Bamberg, which lays a campfire smoke over the whole palate without letting it turn harsh. Caramel, biscuit and toasted malt fill in behind the smoke, and the cold lager fermentation keeps everything clean and dry. Named after a rock formation north-west of Melbourne, and one of the first beers the brewery ever made.

Tasting Notes

AI-generated sensory profile for Hanging Rauch

Appearance

Deep amber to copper in the glass, with a bright clarity that speaks to the clean lager fermentation. The head forms quickly and settles to a thin, persistent collar with good lacing retention. Carbonation is moderate and well-integrated, creating a gentle cascade.

Aroma

Campfire smoke leads immediately from the glass, grounded by the beechwood-smoked malt from Bamberg. Behind this sits a layer of caramel sweetness and toasted grain, with a subtle biscuit undertone. The smoke never turns acrid; instead it sits cleanly over the malt foundation, with no yeast volatiles clouding the profile.

Taste

The palate opens with a bold smoky note that spreads across the tongue without harshness, supported by caramel, biscuit, and lightly toasted malt throughout the mid-palate. The cold fermentation keeps everything dry and clean, preventing any sweetness from becoming cloying. Bitterness is restrained and integrated, allowing the malt character to remain in focus while the smoke threads through the finish.

Finish

The finish is crisp and dry, with the smoke lingering gently into the aftertaste. A modest refreshing quality keeps it from feeling heavy despite the robust malt bill.
