🌍 Canada · Sour · One of 4 Sours in hopIQ

Brewed for the brewery's tenth anniversary and deliberately a return to the barrel-aged, bottle-conditioned ales Four Winds started with. The tart ale spent two years in wine barrels and was conditioned on 1,000 lbs of honeyberries, also known as haskaps, from the Fraser Valley. Listed at 6.4% with no IBU: deep reddish-purple, oak and fruit in the aroma, a dry and tannic finish. 500 ml bottle.

Tasting Notes

AI-generated sensory profile for Ten

Appearance

Deep reddish-purple hue with a pale golden rim at the edges, revealing the wine-barrel influence and extended aging. Clear to slightly hazy, with moderate carbonation evident in a delicate, fine-bubbled head that leaves thin Schaumhaftung along the glass. The color intensity speaks to the concentration of fruit and tannin compounds.

Aroma

Complex nose layered with dried dark fruit, oak, and subtle vinous notes from two years in wine barrels. Honeyberry character emerges as a secondary note—slightly floral and stone-fruit forward, without cloying sweetness. The oak is well-integrated rather than aggressive, with a faint earthy, tannic undertone.

Taste

The palate opens dry and immediately tart, with a bracing acidity that frames layers of dark cherry, plum, and subtle berry jam. Mid-palate reveals structured tannins from barrel contact, balanced by the honeyed undertone of the haskaps. The finish is notably dry and wine-like, with lingering tannin grip.

Finish

Long, drying finish with persistent tannin and a slight astringency that encourages contemplation rather than immediate refreshment. A faint stone-fruit and oak echo remains on the palate for several minutes.
